8x R&D serves the ophthalmic research community by developing custom, innovative technology for retinal imaging.

The founder of 8x R&D, Dr. Mircea Mujat, received his PhD at the University of Central Florida, College of Optics and Photonics in 2004. He continued his activity as a Research Fellow with Harvard Medical School and Wellman Center for Photomedicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, and as a Principal Research Scientist with Physical Sciences Inc for more than 18 years. He has over two decades of experience in design and development of optical instrumentation, data processing and analysis specifically for biomedical applications. His expertise is optical imaging with particular emphasis on the development of ophthalmic imaging technologies funded mostly through NIH, NASA, and DOD SBIR grants and commercial developments. His R&D contributions cover all aspects from concept to design, prototype development, clinical testing, and commercialization, and resulted in multiple imaging platforms that address the needs of the ophthalmic community, in clinical research groups in the US and Europe. Mircea is a Fellow of Optica and SPIE.

Additional R&D interests in biomedical optical imaging include:

  • Polarimetric microscopy / Mueller matrix imaging
  • Phase imaging for live cellular imaging
  • All versions of OCT imaging modalities (time-domain, spectral-domain, Doppler, polarization-sensitive)
  • Confocal microscopy
  • Image processing, analysis, segmentation, quantification
  • Fluorescence, Raman, two-photon microscopy
